Her shoulders had crept up toward her ears by mid-morning. Her breath had gone shallow before lunch. She'd ignored a dull ache behind her sternum for three hours because she "had things to do." None of these were dramatic. Each one, alone, seemed too small to matter. Together, they were the whole story — she just hadn't been taught to read them.
This is the pattern we're going to unpack: not because Maria did anything wrong, but because almost no one is ever taught to notice their body's quiet language before it starts shouting.
What Interoception Actually Is
Interoception is your ability to sense signals originating from inside your own body — your heartbeat, your breath, muscle tension, gut sensations, temperature, and fatigue — before they become symptoms you can't ignore. It's sometimes called the "hidden sense" because, unlike vision or hearing, most of it happens completely below conscious awareness, quietly managing your internal state without you ever noticing.
It's worth distinguishing interoception from its more familiar cousin, proprioception. Proprioception is your sense of where your body is in space — joint angle, muscle effort, balance. Interoception is about how your internal state feels — tense, hot, tired, off. Think of proprioception as your body's outward-facing GPS, and interoception as its inward-facing dashboard. MFR and VM work with both, but this piece focuses on the dashboard, because learning to read it early is what separates a manageable twinge from a three-day setback.
Why Fascia Makes This Especially Relevant to You
Here's the fact that reframes everything: the fascial network — the connective tissue web wrapping every muscle, organ, vessel, and nerve in your body — contains an estimated 250 million free nerve endings and pain receptors, more than the skin's roughly 200 million and far more than the eye's 126 million visual receptors. Fascia isn't just packing material holding your organs and muscles in place; it is one of the richest sensory organs in your entire body.
Specialized receptors throughout fascia continuously monitor mechanical tension and pressure, feeding information straight into your central nervous system. Your low back and abdominal fascia are particularly receptor-dense, functioning almost like a large internal antenna that senses tension arriving from your arms, legs, spine, and abdominal cavity all at once. When a restriction forms anywhere in this network — from an old injury, a surgical scar, or chronic postural strain — it doesn't stay silent. It sends signals. The problem is that most people have never learned to listen for them at low volume, so they only notice once the signal has escalated into pain.
This is precisely why MFR and VM work so well together with interoceptive training. Manual therapy addresses the physical restriction directly — releasing fascial adhesions, restoring organ mobility and motility — while interoceptive skill-building addresses your capacity to notice, in real time, when that tissue is heading toward trouble again. Why the Warning Signal Gets Missed
If fascia is broadcasting information constantly, why do so many patients still feel blindsided? Part of the answer is that most interoceptive processing happens below the threshold of consciousness by design — your nervous system handles the vast majority of internal regulation automatically, without needing your attention, and only recruits conscious awareness once a signal becomes strong enough to matter. For someone with a well-tuned system, that threshold works fine. But chronic pain, old trauma, hypervigilance, or long periods of ignoring the body's signals can distort this threshold in either direction — some people become numb to early signals until they're severe, while others become hyperaware and catastrophize normal sensations.
There's a technique called interoceptive exposure, originally developed for anxiety treatment, that's useful to understand here. It works by deliberately, safely inducing internal sensations — a racing heart, breathlessness, dizziness — in a controlled setting, so the nervous system learns those sensations are uncomfortable but not dangerous. The insight underneath it applies broadly: the more familiar you become with your body's range of internal sensations, the less any single sensation can ambush you, and the sooner you can act on it appropriately instead of panicking or ignoring it. This is essentially what happens when patients learn to notice fascial tension building hours before a flare — closing the gap between when the signal starts and when it's actually registered.
The Emotional Weight of Being "Blindsided"

When the Body's Signals Get Genuinely Scrambled
If you live with EDS, MCAS, POTS, chronic fatigue syndrome, or long COVID, you may already sense that your body's signals feel less like a dashboard and more like static — and there's real physiology behind that, not a failure of attention on your part.
In hypermobile EDS, the connective tissue that houses many of your sensory receptors is looser and less structurally consistent, which can genuinely blur the signals those receptors send, making it harder to tell early tension from your body's normal baseline. POTS and other forms of dysautonomia affect the autonomic nervous system directly — the very system responsible for translating internal states into signals you can consciously notice — so shifts in heart rate, temperature, or blood flow may not register the way they would in someone without dysautonomia, or may suddenly surge into awareness all at once. In chronic fatigue syndrome and long COVID, research increasingly points to altered central processing of body signals — the brain's prediction and interpretation of what's happening inside you gets thrown off, sometimes amplifying sensations, sometimes dulling them, independent of what's actually happening in the tissue itself.
Here's the hopeful part: none of this means your body is broken or that you're destined to keep being blindsided. It means your interoceptive signal is traveling through more "noise" than most people's, so the practices in this post matter more for you, not less — and small, consistent attention pays off precisely because your baseline needs more deliberate mapping than someone without these conditions. Many people in this situation find that slowing everything down — literally taking more time in body-scanning and breathing practices than feels necessary — starts to separate the signal from the noise over weeks, not days. Tracking your sensations in a simple log, rather than relying on memory, becomes especially valuable here, because your day-to-day baseline may shift more than most people's, and a log gives you a stable record to compare against. Left untrained, the gap between signal and awareness tends to widen rather than close on its own — each ignored early warning reinforces the pattern of only noticing your body once it's already in distress. The earlier you start closing that gap, the sooner flare-ups stop feeling random.
Building interoceptive awareness now means you can:
Catch fascial tension building hours before it becomes a flare, instead of being caught off guard by it.
Make small, timely adjustments — a break, a stretch, a breath practice — instead of a full shutdown days later.
Trust your own body's reporting again, instead of feeling like a passenger in an unpredictable system.
Get more consistent, lasting results from your MFR and VM sessions, because you're maintaining the released tissue between visits instead of unknowingly re-loading it.
There's no strict timeline for developing this skill — some patients notice shifts within a few weeks of practice, others take longer, especially with a more complex condition layered in, and that's genuinely fine. What matters is starting the practice, not perfecting it immediately.
Expanded Self-Treatment Practice: The "Body Radar Scan"
Step 1 — Ground Through the Breath (2 minutes, seated). Sit comfortably, close your eyes if that feels safe, and simply notice the air moving in through your nose and out again — no changing it, just observing. Safety note: if closing your eyes ever feels destabilizing, keep them softly open and lowered instead.
Step 2 — Trace Your Outer Contour (2 minutes). Mentally trace the outline of your body from head to toes, like tracing a shape with your mind, releasing any spot where you notice gripping or bracing.
Step 3 — Drop Into the Breath's Depth (2 minutes). Follow one full breath cycle from your nose, down your throat, into your lungs, and feel your belly rise as your diaphragm drops; then follow the exhale in reverse.
Step 4 — Find Your Pulse (1–2 minutes). Rest two fingers lightly on your wrist or over your heart and simply notice your own heartbeat's rhythm and pace, without judging it as too fast or too slow.
Step 5 — Scan for the Quiet Signals (2 minutes). Ask, one at a time: am I hungry, thirsty, too warm, too cool, do I need to move, do I need to rest? Notice each answer without immediately acting on it.
Step 6 — Name One Word and Log It (1 minute). Choose a single word for your current internal state — "tight," "calm," "foggy," "buzzy" — and jot it down with the date and time. Safety note: this is data collection, not self-criticism; there are no wrong answers here, only information.
Practiced daily for a few weeks, this scan builds a working map of your own baseline, which makes deviations from that baseline — the early warning signs of a flare — far easier to catch while they're still small.
